Should Terrelle Pryor Go Pro?

•January 3, 2011 • Leave a Comment

In an interesting article for CNN/Sports Illustrated, writer Andy Staples lays out some compelling arguments regarding why Ohio State University quarterback Terrelle Pryor should leave behind the chains of the NCAA and find his way to the NFL. He says the same for four other Ohio State players,Boom Herron, DeVier Posey, Mike Adams and Solomon Thomas, who are expected to serve a five game suspension next season for selling some of their gear in exchange for a little cash and free tattoos. Staples argues that the NCAA is exploiting these young men by punishing them for making money off their own names and likenesses, even though the NCAA earns money from the very same images.

“Go pro. Do it immediately after the Sugar Bowl. Play the game, take a shower, and sign with the agent of your choice. Then go drink a Hand Grenade at Tropical Isle to celebrate,” Staples said. “You can go to the NFL or the CFL or the UFL, where you’ll be paid when someone profits from your name or likeness. You’ll be fairly compensated for your contribution to your team’s gross revenue. Should you benefit from your notoriety, you won’t be punished.”

Staples also makes the argument that by staying in college for another year, the players are risking a downgrade in their draft status.

The bottom line is this: The NCAA is an organization that relies on historical racial disparities to earn a multi-billion dollar profit off the African American community (a form of legalized corruption). Not only are families left in poverty by this system, educational access is impeded by full-time practice schedules and travel to games. Adding insult to injury is the fact that many of the black athletes who give so much on the field are denied coaching opportunities upon graduation, further supporting this athletic caste system which rivals apartheid. While collegiate athletics is certainly interesting and entertaining to all of us, it’s time to re-evaluate whether we are getting our fair share of the economic pie. The black male has been long asked to serve as the athletic donkey for a multi-billion dollar professional sports league. Perhaps we deserve better than that. ” – Boyce Watkins

2months 8 days =)

•December 20, 2010 • Leave a Comment

been on a special kind of fast for 2months and 8 days.

wont give details.

but I’m realizing that a lot of people use the term “relationship with God” loosly. we think it simply means going to church every sunday, making sure we attend bible study, etc… but so much more goes into it.

just with any relationship…there are ups and downs…triumphs and tribulations…that ultimately teach us more about God and ourselves. and we learn that at the center of every obstacle is God’s love.

love is something i’ve tried to find in the hearts of many a trifling boy..man..and some not trifling at alll…i’ve searched for love in the hearts of what we would consider ‘good’ men too…. and to no avail i’ve always found myself empty-handed (or hearted). this search has always forced me to look at myself and wonder ‘what’s wrong with me?”  as i watched all my friends get scooped up despite the fact that my ‘stats’ or qualifications were just as good if not better than theirs, i felt the frustration grow in me.

everything came to a halt on Oct. 10, 2010. 10/10/’10 .  exasperated, i came upon the realization that no one had been there for me nor fulfilled my needs quite like God has.  therefore, what did i look like complaining, moaning and groaning about what these other less than mature fellows had done to my feelings and heart over the year.  Their Creator has loved me since before i took my first breath. So all of my attention, hopes, and efforts needed to be devoted to Him.  so this is my journey…for the next year…already there have been some very memorable moments…i look forward to sharing them here as the year progresses =) amooches!

Updates & My Problem With Blogs These Days

•December 17, 2010 • Leave a Comment

Updates:

Im still a grad student.

my grades were mediocre this semester.

still single.

growing in the Lord.

will do better with this blog. promise.

now on to the real issue. These blogs.

sooo, a blogger has an issue with blogs? how backwards hunh?

well i do have an issue. not with all blogs because some blogs are actually quite awesome…(see>>>> bloglist to the side) Some blogs are thought provoking and incredibly creative.   After a long day of “blah”, if I look at a blog, I want to be taken to a place of wonderful sights that are new and inspiring to me. whether it’s in fashion, politics, travel WHATEVER.

so i take no issue with ALL blogs.  i do take a little issue with GOSSIP blogs however.   now i mainly look at the ones geared towards African American audiences. NecoleBitchie.com Concreteloop.com. Bossip.com Theybf.com and when i want absolute baffonery in my life..Mediatakeout.com.   never sandra rose. sorry.  there’s a few more i look at but those are some of the main ones.  i think each one of these bloggers dedicate an admirable amount of time to keeping their site up-to-par…and iM inspired by their hustle (i.e. NecoleBitchie). But why is it, that all of these blogs report the same information every day in almost the exact same way?? i guess it cant be helped bc gossip is gossip no matter who tells it.  but it just seems like no one has that extra…**umph**.  well, Concreteloop does their history posts and NecoleBitchie does her Bitchie fashion looks, but alot of the other information seems very repitative.  something is missing from that side of the blog world….cant quite put my finger on it…but all i know is traveling from site to site seeing similar stories posted in almost the same order is getting old. *shrug*
